The long wait, dateby date

From a 2022 "well underway" to a November 19, 2026 launch, here is every confirmed date in the road to Grand Theft Auto VI, and what each one changed.

A long neon-lit road stretching toward a sunset with calendar pages along the verge.
Same sun. Different tomorrow.
Same roads, bigger stories.

Some launches arrive with a countdown clock. This one arrived with a calendar full of crossed-out squares. Grand Theft Auto VI has been a public project for more than four years, and the road to its release has had two delays, two trailers before the summer of 2026, a pre-order launch and a Netflix premiere. Here are the dates we can source, in order.

The announcements

February 4, 2022. Rockstar Games confirmed the next Grand Theft Auto was "well underway", the first official acknowledgement that the game existed, per its Wikipedia timeline. Nothing else was shown.

December 2023. The first trailer arrived a day earlier than planned after a leak, which pushed Rockstar to post the official version immediately, TechCrunch reported. The company's planned date had been Tuesday, December 5. TechCrunch counted 85 million YouTube views in 22 hours, ahead of a 59.4 million record held by a MrBeast video for non-music uploads.

May 2025. Take-Two announced the game would move from its original fall 2025 window to May 26, 2026. Rockstar then released a second trailer on May 6, 2025, according to Wikipedia's account of the period.

November 6, 2025. The second delay moved the date to November 19, 2026. In its statement, Rockstar said it was sorry for adding time to "a long wait" and that the extra months would let the team finish the game with the polish players expect. TechCrunch carried the statement.

Every delay moved the date, but the November 19 date has now survived the whole year.

The run-up

June 25, 2026. Pre-orders opened at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, and Take-Two confirmed a November 12 pre-load for digital and physical purchases. Pre-orders and early purchases include the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders also get a free month of GTA+.

August 7, 2026. At its first-quarter report, Take-Two reiterated its $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion net bookings outlook for fiscal 2027 and cited the November 19 launch.

August 27, 2026. "An Extended Look" premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET and reached YouTube at 9 p.m. ET, per Rockstar and press coverage.

September 17, 2026. At its annual meeting, Take-Two reaffirmed November 19 and called the game a single-player launch. We cover it in our news desk report.

October 1, 2026. The ESRB rating of Mature 17+ appeared, as reported by Tech Times.

What is still ahead

If the date holds, the wait from that first sentence in 2022 to the shelf will have been just under five years. For scale, Grand Theft Auto V launched on September 17, 2013, per Wikipedia, which makes this a thirteen-year gap between numbered entries.

That context explains why each date above carried so much weight. Being told to wait twice within six months, in May and November of 2025, is hard on any audience. What stands out in the record is how the cadence changed. The early messages were single announcements. The later ones came close together: a store page, a premium edition, a streaming premiere, a creator policy and an age rating, all within about three months.

Not every question has an answer. Storage size, a PC version and any online plan remain unannounced. We have left rumoured dates and sizes out of this timeline deliberately, because a calendar is only useful if every square on it is real.
